Mabey Celebrates Engineering Success at Bridges Scotland 2017

Exhibiting at Stand B65, the company has delivered over 30 bridges in Scotland over the past seven years

As Bridges Scotland 2017 opens its doors, leading bridge and engineering services specialist Mabey is showcasing how it has delivered quick, safe and efficient solutions across the country over the past decade.

Since 2010, Mabey has installed over 30 bridges in Scotland for a wide range of customers in a variety of sectors.  At the Bridges Scotland event, the company will demonstrate how its bridging solutions, including its Compact 200™ and the Universal™ are being used to develop, improve and repair essential infrastructure in urban and rural areas. It will also demonstrate how its wide range of construction services, ranging from propping and jacking through to a wide range of bespoke specialist engineering services, are being used to deliver projects more quickly, safely and efficiently all over the world.

Recent projects in Scotland include:

River Spey:

In 2016, Mabey installed a temporary bridge over the River Spey in Laggan, Inverness-shire. The 50-metre Mabey Universal bridge enabled BAM Nuttall to drive a 197-tonne vehicle to the SSE Melgarve substation, as part of a power line upgrade. The bridge was installed in severe weather conditions, ahead of schedule, providing additional public traffic access for the wider community.

Guardbridge Energy Centre:

First founded in 1855, the Guardbridge Energy site has been converted from a distillery to a papermill and has recently been acquired by the University of St Andrews as part of its drive to become the UK’s first energy carbon neutral University. Contractors Vital Energi found that the original concrete bridge used to access the site was no longer suitable to carry the 40 tonne vehicles that would need to access the energy centre. A sustainable steel Mabey Compact 200 now provides vital access to the plant, and a cantilever launch ensured minimal impact on the river area.

Glenfinnan – A830

A £10 million Transport Scotland investment package was put in place to replace seven bridges along the A830, one of Scotland’s most scenic routes providing vital infrastructure between Fort William and Mallaig. Mabey, contracted by BEAR Scotland, provided bridging for temporary diversion routes adjacent to the existing bridges during the replacement works. The chosen solution for this project, the Mabey Compact 200 bridge, enabled minimal disruption to the area and ensured that long diversions were avoided throughout.

Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route

In September 2017, Mabey announced it was working on a vital project to build a 58km bypass in Aberdeen – just one example of the breadth of infrastructure services Mabey offers, including bespoke propping.

Mabey was brought on to the project to provide temporary support structures for the pre-cast concrete beams for several of the 75 structures to be built across the project. These beams form the bridge decks as they are craned into position and while the permanent concrete cross head beams are constructed. The scheme combines many of Mabey’s industry-leading propping and jacking systems to provide a cost-effective engineering solution.
